I have just finished my first review of a self published author and found it to be an interesting experience. You want to give an honest review, but as another self published author, you hope that others are kind to you. It has been something of a conundrum. In the end, I decided that honesty was probably the best policy, so that was what I did. I guess I also hope that people are honest with me so I can really tell what they think of my book when they do a review. After all honest feedback is what will ultimately make me a better writer.
The review was for the novel Totem: Book 1: Scars by C. Michael Lorion. I thought I would post my review here as well.
Totem is a well written and interesting read. Lorion's use of language and ability to create vivid imagery is particularly impressive. There were many times that I read a sentence and thought how clever it was.
The narrative is complicated and the constant changes of point of view had me confused a little at first. It wasn't until about half way through that I finally managed to keep the different characters and their relationships straight in my head.
I did like the way that this author was able to create distinct characters. As a reader you become very interested in these character's lives - I was particularly invested in Abby and her father Edward.
Be prepared for lots of loose ends at the end of the novel. It is clear that this is one of a series and the reader will need to commit as this author doesn't give much away.
Not the usual kind of book I read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
