Fireflies by Bree Wolf is a great middle grade read. The writing style is simple but engaging – there were times I was reminded of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five Series. The reader is drawn into the story through the character of Gabriel, a lonely, isolated boy who withdraws from the world he lives in. It is only when he goes to stay at his Grandparent’s that he finally begins to learn to have the confidence to stand up for himself.
The characters and world created by Wolf are charming and unique. Each of the children has their own strength and weaknesses – together, this motley crew are sure to keep young readers entertained. The message of the novel is not heavy handed – but is clearly drawn: that dreams are worth fighting for.
